I would love to hear your thoughts on this.
I feel that since I keep a blog I don't need (but probably don't want) to write a little family update to put in my Christmas cards. Last year being pregnant and looking for a way out of work I just put my blog address in our Christmas cards. (Yes, tacky I know.) However, everyone I send cards to doesn't read my blog even when they have the address, so maybe they would enjoy an update, then again, maybe that is why they don't read my blog! On the other hand, there are quite a few people who are (unlucky?) recipients of my cards who do read my blog and they probably don't want to read the same old stuff they've read all year. I like to make my Christmas cards so that is where I put most of my effort and by the time I'm done, writing something brief and hopefully humorous or clever is often more than I can put out during the Christmas season. So what's your vote? Little newsy update or not? What do you other bloggers do?

Christmas Card Question

I do not get out much and I am not too much of a blogger--I only look at others here and there--so part of my favorite part of Christmas is sending and getting cards. A picture is a must in my opinion, the personalized cards are precious treasures, and the small update is extra icing on the cake--some devour it and some scrape it off. If you do go for it don't let it be too much. I always write too much because putting a whole year on a page is hard, but I am getting better as I see others do just one special thing for each person. However, I don't think you need any advice or thoughts in this area...You always make the perfect christmas cards and I can't wait to see what you dream up this year. DON'T STRESS--you are an amazing example to me and everything you touch seems to come out as a masterpiece.
Ummm. I agree with Anonymous.
yep your cards are always just right, for me, i love photos - and each year i put a photo of the kids on the front. I have a brother in law who leaves our cards up all year, which shows the progression of the kids growing over the years.
This year I will probably put a write up in mine, as I have been slack with blog and emails, but just dot point highlights, cover kids and house happenings.
I still have to do the newsy letter - for the same reason you mentioned, (and for a family journal) but for the last couple of years, I've included my blog address, and said to the effect, 'I you want to see pictures of us, go to my post: "Our Year in Pictures"', then I make one blog post with a bunch of pictures of highlights of the last year. People have told me they loved it, and so have I. :)
I say include your blog address and a brief update in the cards. I love the updates I get in cards, as long as they are not too long or too braggy. Don't get me wrong, I don't think there's anything wrong with sharing your family's highlights or a few funny things. That's why I vote for brief. It doesn't have to be particularly clever for me to enjoy reading it. So make the cards and spend just a few minutes writing somthing to be included--that's my vote.
I love pictures, however I feel like it's a little impersonal without some sort of update. I personally like it, lengthy or not...I have yet to read a Christmas card that I felt was overly braggy, my opinion of course. We need to rejoice in each others successes and grieve in losses...Hopefully I'm not being preachy in my last statement :)
I have read my share of braggy letters, and I would rather be left wanting more, not having more. There are some Christmas letters I can't even get through. It sometimes comes down to what you have time to do, and what do you desire to share with people. Once you decide, do you want to do my letter this year!!!
aunt k
I agree with the icing comment. Some people will love it and some people will not, so do what you like! Or as my friend told me... her aunt's opinion...the people who understand don't need an explanation and the people who don't understand will not be swayed by any explanation. She was referring to a messy house, but I think it applies to cute Christmas updates as well.
hmmm, I thought your card was great last year. I personally think that if they were REALLY interested in the update they could go to the blog. I enjoy the letters, but going to your blog is so simple. If you have time to do the letter it is great, but if not the blog address covers it!...I was wondering if my bloger's who also get a card would rather not, since they see my blog all the time? But, I am with you...I love doing the cards!
I, personally, ordered Christmas cards with pictures and put our blog address on them. I didn't feel it was tacky. If people want an update, they'll visit the site.
