How to Sew on a Merit Badge

I've sewn on my fair share of merit badges in my sojourn of motherhood. . . .as I was catching up on this job the other night I thought it might make a good blog post not only for a record of how I've spent some of my time as a mom, but also as a possible resource for people who don't know how to do it.

Now I am not claiming to be a professional or to know the 'right' way (because there probably *is* a right way and I just don't know it!). But I have come up with a method that works good for me. Here's what I do: put a piece of double sided tape on the badge and adhere it where you want it. This helps to stop slipping so the badge doesn't get turned while placing it on the machine or while taking the first couple of stitches. I use a light brown (khaki) colored thread. If you stitch right along the inside green or gray ridge your thread will show very little. In the beginning I changed thread colors for each badge and it was a HUGE pain, but in trying out other neutral colors, khaki shows the very least. I also don't do any back stitching. I figure I'm not washing the merit badge sash and it's not going to scout camp so they will stay on without that extra step. (Sewing badges onto a uniform, however, is an entirely different story. . . on those, I often go around twice just to make sure it is on good so I won't have to repair anytime soon.) So there you have it. . . (does anyone know a better way besides the glue?)

I like your idea for using doublesided tape! Sounds much easier than putting a pin through it! I'm impressed with all of the merit badges. You must a very dedicated scoutmaster or you yourself are doing an outstanding job!

I have never thought of using double stick tape. Good idea! I use invisible thread on the top and green or khaki in the bobbin. Works very well.

How close is Cach to getting all his merit badges? Or has that milestone been reached?

Invisible thread is a good idea. . .what thickness do you use? Mine always gives me a headache.

No, Cache still has 8 more to finish up. He's done most of the work on them, but is always so busy with school that the finishing work just hasn't gotten done yet. We are pushing him to have them finished by his birthday, so hopefully soon!

Hey Darcee,
I love your blog. Especially since I haven't felt well enough to go to church for a while. Almost done though! Trent gave me the best idea for sewing badges. He suggested a button stitch in four places. (top, bottom, and sides) We haven't had any come off yet in the wash and it is so much easier to change them. I just sewed 20 on Clayton's sash and it went pretty fast.
